When Baldassare Galuppi was writing La caduta di Adamo in Rome in 1747, opera performances were strictly forbidden in the Pope's city. His oratorio about the fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from paradise therefore dispenses with all stage effects - but the music still resembles a real opera seria. Galuppi, the most prominent Venetian opera composer of the generation after Antonio Vivaldi, tells of the Fall of Man with highly virtuoso coloraturas as well as with the sensitive melodies of the then modern Neapolitan style. The Helsinki Baroque Orchestra with its musical director Aapo Häkkinen has long been one of the leading baroque orchestras with its emotional and energetic playing and has specialized in unpublished treasures of music history.
