Hear Handel's Messiah, a masterpiece of choral music, in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral.
The work remains one of the most popular examples of sacred music to this day. Beginning in the first part with the Old Testament prophecies of the prophets, the second part tells the life of Jesus, his birth, his death on the cross - as the fulfillment of the prophecies - and in the third part with the resurrection, the entire history of salvation in the Messiah.
The great English choral tradition offered Handel important inspiration in the choral treatment and so here too the choir takes the main part in the action, whereas arias and recitatives tend to take a back seat. The powerful climax of the Hallelujah became a real sacred “popular hit” and still moves every listener today, just as it did at the first performance in Dublin in 1742.
The work was created by Sing Mit! Festival choir developed in workshops lasting several days under the direction of David Wordsworth. The Vienna Cathedral Orchestra and well-known soloists will also be on stage.
