Maria Stuart was accused of being an accomplice to her husband’s murder in Scotland and then imprisoned after escaping to England. For 18 years she has awaited the verdict of her cousin Elisabeth I, who cannot bring herself to pronounce a death sentence. However, she is also unable to find Maria innocent because she might then be able to advance her claim to Elisabeth’s throne. The conflict escalates when the attractive Earl of Leicester is caught between the two sides. Elisabeth describes her rival as a murderer while Maria curses the Queen as a bastard. In the end, Elisabeth signs the death warrant and Maria is executed.

Based on Schiller’s ‘Maria Stuart’, Gaetano Donizetti (1797– 1848) conceived his opera with a beautiful and unfortunate heroine – the perfect belcanto title role. The confrontation with her royal cousin Elisabeth I – one that Schiller had invented – was particularly attractive to the composer as here he could create a clash between two equally strong female characters.

The Flemish director Guy Joosten specialises in the belcanto repertoire. He stages the thrilling conflicts and power games in designs by Roel Van Berckelaer.
