As usual with Wagner, the conception and creation of »Lohengrin«, which the composer described as a romantic opera, was preceded by the reading of numerous writings about the mysterious Swan Knight. And so in this work, which premiered under Franz Liszt in 1850, the well-known elements of the legend of the savior sent by the Grail, breaking the ban on asking questions and the dark world of the sorceress Ortrud also play an important role. Nevertheless, like all of Wagner's operas, »Lohengrin« cannot be reduced to the setting of medieval material. Rather, Wagner was concerned with showing socio-political utopias of a just world, which he clothed in the guise of a half-historical, half-legendary event. With Sara Jakubiak as Elsa, a singer who is highly acclaimed worldwide both vocally and as an actress, will be presented to the State Opera audience. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, on the other hand, made her debut at the Haus am Ring as Brangäne a few years ago and is now returning for the first time as Ortrud. One of the undisputedly most important Lohengrin singers at the moment is Klaus Florian Vogt, who, not least because of his very special, unmistakable timbre, can claim a place in the history of interpretation.
