Les Huguenots - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Les Huguenots
Opéra in five acts Text by Eugène Scribe and Émile Deschamps
Premiered June 29, 2019
In French with German and English surtitles
A single night transformed the city of Paris into a house of the dead: on St. Bartholomew's Night in 1572, French Catholics murdered thousands of their fellow citizens who, as Huguenots, belonged to the new faith of the Reformation. 260 years later, Giacomo Meyerbeer brings the events to the stage in his opera »The Huguenots«. With the love story between the Huguenot Raoul and the Catholic Valentine, he shows how a religious conflict escalates and finally leads to a massacre in which even family ties no longer count. Meyerbeer's opera »The Huguenots«, which premiered in 1836, is a key work of 19th-century opera, but largely disappeared from the repertoire after the First World War. In his production of »The Huguenots«, director Peter Konwitschny shows how religious conflicts gradually destroy a society and make it impossible to live together.
