Les Contes d’Hoffmann / Hoffmanns Erzählungen
Fantastique opera in five acts
Libretto by Jules Barbier based on the play by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, version by Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck
Premiered December 4, 2016
In French with German and English surtitles
The fantastic opera »The Tales of Hoffmann« by Jacques Offenbach from 1881 is based on stories by the romantic poet E.T.A. Hoffmann. He also appears in person in the opera as a poet who is unhappily in love and thus takes on the role of the narrator. In a sophisticated game of deception between reality and imagination, he encounters his own literary figures: the puppet Olympia, the artist Antonia and the courtesan Giulietta. But none wants to prove to be the longed-for ideal lover. In his imagery, rich in associations and illusions, director Johannes Erath follows the fate of a man who longingly stretches out his hand for love, but pulls back when it threatens to become real.
