A slum area around Catfish Row in Charleston is home to many African Americans. Poor people, more or less failed livelihoods at the bottom of the social ladder, are trying to make a living here. But because of the racial segregation, they have no real future prospects. Among them is the lame beggar Porgy, who wanders around with a goat and a handcart. On a warm evening, some men get into a quarrel while playing dice, the aggressive Crown stabs his opponents and breaks away. He has lived with the pretty Bess, who is now with Porgy - what Porgy is very happy about, he had always kept an eye on her, but never believed she would ever pay attention to as a lame cripple. Amazingly, a strong affection develops between Porgy and Bess. When another man, Sportin’s Life, tries to persuade Bess to go to New York with him, she declines. She feels part of Porgy now. On a picnic trip to an island that the whole street community - except Porgy - undertakes, Crown suddenly reappears because he is hiding there. He secretly presses Bess until she becomes weak under his intrusive caresses and follows him into the forest. The others drive back without her, she remains missing for a week and then returns to Porgy, distraught and sick. She recovers slowly, confesses everything to Porgy, but assures him of her love. She doesn't want that to happen again. He forgives her and they both live in harmony again. But Crown returns some time later and wants to get Bess. Porgy kills Crown. The police do not identify him as the murderer, but he is jailed for a minor offense. While he's gone, Bess has no hold and believes Sportin ’Life that Porgy will never get out of jail again. Now she is going to New York. Contrary to expectations, Porgy is allowed to leave prison after a week and no longer finds Bess. When he hears where she left, he decides to follow her and sets off for New York with his goat and handcart.
