The young Katerina Ismailowa, who came from a poor background, was unhappily married to the rich provincial merchant Zinowi. After five years, the marriage is still childless and Katerina suffers from her husband's lack of affection. The young woman is also affected by the daily reproaches and insinuations of her tyrannical father-in-law Boris, who is actually in charge of the family business. However, the tormenting everyday routine is abruptly interrupted by the attitude of the servant Sergej. Although Katerina is warned about Sergei and even witnesses him taking part in a mass rape, she falls completely under his spell.
The fact that Zinowi is away from home for a long time enables Sergei and Katerina to spend countless undisturbed nights of love together. One evening, however, the two are surprised by Boris, who then publicly whips Sergej in a rage. Faced with this cruel process, Katerina decides to kill Boris and serves him a mushroom dish mixed with rat poison, which he eats with great appetite. Shortly thereafter, Boris dies.
One night, the two lovers Katerina and Sergej are surprised by Zinowi returning home. They kill him without further ado and hide his body in the basement. Some time later, Katerina and Sergei decide to get married and throw a big wedding party. Meanwhile, a drunk farmer finds Zinowi's body and alerts the police, who interrupt the wedding celebrations and arrest Sergei and Katerina.
Despite Sergei and Katerina's sentences to forced labor, Katerina's love for Sergei remains intact. On the other hand, he seeks the favor of Sonjetka, a pretty fellow prisoner. When Katerina realizes that Sergei is betraying her, she kills herself and her rival.
