La Périchole - Premiere
Opéra bouffe in three acts
Jacques Offenbach
Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy
The viceroy of Peru lets his corrupt ministers get mistresses from the people. This time the head of government has caught the eye of the destitute street singer Périchole, who is leaving her lover Piquillo for the prospect of finally being able to eat her fill. But a decent mistress has to be married, and as a husband, the courtiers drag Piquillo, of all people, who is made compliant with alcohol and the necessary small change. But does money alone make you happy? With La Périchole, a masterpiece by Jacques Offenbach and finally an operetta is on the repertoire of the former operetta house Theater an der Wien. Nikolaus Habjan, a director and puppeteer who has long been a favorite of the public and also a sharp commentator on political conditions, breathes new life into the opéra bouffe with opera singers playing, actors singing and dancing puppets.
