La gazza ladra - Schedule, Program & Tickets
La gazza ladra
Opera semiseria in two acts
Gioachino Rossini
Libretto by Giovanni Gherardini
A feathered thief, an innocent maid sentenced to death and a corrupt power politician - these are the protagonists of Rossini's seriously comic opera, whose overture with drum rolls and oboe solo is one of the most famous pieces in music history.La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) takes place in a time of great social upheaval. When Ninetta is accused of stealing silver cutlery, a chain of unfortunate circumstances initially makes the happy ending promised by the opera genre "semiseria" a long way off. What kind of world is this where you can be executed for allegedly stealing a spoon? With Rossini's opera, which premiered in 1817, director Tobias scratches his debut in Vienna and traces the insecurity of people in a politically and socially destabilized world.
