La Fille du Régiment

Comic opera in two acts, in French, with spoken dialogue in Hungarian, with Hungarian, English and French subtitles

Ever since she was orphaned as a young child, young and brave Marie has grown up in the French Army. Unaware of her aristocratic origins, she falls in love with a handsome farm boy. Will she really marry him for love? La fille du régiment, set during the Napoleonic Wars, was one of Gaetano Donizetti's most successful operas of its time, and singing the title role was the dream of every coloratura soprano throughout the 19th century. In 1838, tired of his constant struggles with Italian censorship, Donizetti moved to Paris. It was there that the great Italian bel canto composer wrote his first French-language comic opera, following much more closely the unique characteristics of the French opéra-comique style and its composers. Donizetti's opera is an open love letter to France – and the country returned his affection, performing it every July 14, on Bastille Day.
