L'Olimpiade

DRAMMA PER MUSICA IN TWO ACTS
Libretto by Pietro Metastasio

Sport, political theory and social criticism? Where, if not in an opera, could these three things be brought into play together! L'Olimpiade is one of the most frequently set librettos by the great master Metastasio. During the Olympic Games, two lovers have to go through difficult tests, not only of a sporting nature, before everything turns out well in the end. Cimarosa wrote his opera in 1784 for the inauguration of the Teatro Eretenio in Vicenza. In terms of quality, it stands out far from the mass of settings, because the composer can score here with his extensive experience with comedy and tragedy as well as with a tonal language that already refers to the 19th century.
