L’amor coniugale - Schedule, Program & Tickets

L’amor coniugale

The plot of this opera caused a sensation at the Theater an der Wien more than 200 years ago in another form: a woman disguises herself as a man in order to be able to free her husband from prison without being recognized. But just a few months before Ludwig van Beethoven's Fidelio, which is much more famous today, Johann Simon Mayr's opera was published in Padua in July 1805: a song of praise to conjugal love, "l'amor coniugale". Mayr was wrongly forgotten in the 19th century and today is often regarded as a mere link between the classically oriented works of Giovanni Paisiello, for example, and the bel canto. Incisive performances of his operas have meanwhile sufficiently demonstrated how rewarding an encounter with his works is.
