Kleider machen Leute

Alexander Zemlinsky's opera “Clothes Make People” already bears the “moral of their story” in the title. Based on the novellas “The People of Seldwyla” by Gottfried Keller, she tells the story of the tailor Wenzel Strapinski, who comes to the Swiss village of Goldach as a stranger and is mistaken for a Polish count due to his noble appearance. The “beautiful appearance” naturally upsets the entire village community ... Until the end, true love emerges as the victor over nobility and property.

The composer Alexander Zemlinksy worked from 1904–1910 as music director and first conductor at the Kaiserjubiläums-Stadttheater, which later became the Volksoper. On October 2nd, 1910 “Clothes Make People” was premiered at our house under the direction of the composer.

On the occasion of the 150th birthday and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the death of Alexander Zemlinsky in the 2021/22 season, the work will return to the Volksoper's repertoire in a concert performance.
