Killing Carmen

by Nils Strunk, Lukas Schrenk, and Gabriel Cazes
In German, French, and English with surtitles

"I was warned that I would have to fear for my life," declares Carmen – anticipating her own doom – in the finale of Bizet's "opera of all operas." A few minutes later, she is dead, stabbed by her then-lover Don José. A crime of love or a social crisis? Does freedom itself die with Carmen? What void does she leave behind? What happens next?

After their two successful productions of The Magic Flute – The opera but not the opera and Chess Novella at the Burgtheater, Nils Strunk and Lukas Schrenk are now adapting a repertoire classic for the Volksoper. Together with the musician Gabriel Cazes, they are developing a new adaptation of Carmen for a cross-genre ensemble. Bizet's famous melodies meet a variety of musical styles: jazz, flamenco, westerns, musicals, pop, chanson, and much more.
