Karoline und Kasimir - Noli me tangere

“What is wrong will go to waste / Although it rules today. / What is real should come - / Although it dies today. "

Vienna, 2022. A small troupe of actors, accompanied and documented by a film team, will then rehearse and play von Horváth's “Volksstück” KASIMIR UND KAROLINE at the Volkstheater Ödön. You * research the poet's estate and find, among other things, an autobiographical fragment of a novel entitled ADIEU, EUROPA! In it Horváth sketches: emigration in small steps - perhaps he wanted to go to Hollywood - an opportunistic theater and literary establishment that quarantined the author, ostracized by the Nazis; or: a madhouse, where at least a certain freedom with the goddess of art beckons. These are just a few of the traces on which the theater group - similar to Jacques Rivette's thirteen-hour film epic OUT 1: NOLI ME TANGERE - loses itself more and more during rehearsals and drifts into conspiracy theories.
A big shoot as a conspiracy of facts and fictions: on and behind the stage, experts ask questions about the actual course of Horváth's fatal accident, which, according to official information, happened in Paris in 1938 when a branch was struck by lightning.
While the theater people move over such topics as if under a glass lintel, a strange whisper rises in the boxes. Allegedly new details and manuscripts are brought to light in literary archives. There are conspiratorial meetings in the Prater. The whole city gradually becomes a stage for mysterious maneuvers and tricks.
After the lockdowns of the past few months, the folk theater debut of the American Nature Theater of Oklahoma (Kelly Copper and Pavol Liška) once again raises the question: How much must art and culture risk in order to reach a critical public, if not at all create? As most recently with their film and performance project DIE KINDER DER TOTEN (steirischer herbst 2017), they turn film shoots into live performances in which the recording device itself becomes a stage hero.
