The performances of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous composition in the Kreuzkirche Dresden by the famous Dresden Kreuzchor, the Dresden Philharmonic and first-class soloists are an integral part of the Christmas season. Solemn opening and closing choruses, the brilliant setting of the biblical Christmas story in the recitatives and the magical arias of the vocal soloists characterize this wonderful work by Bach.
Even if today much of the magic of Christmas is brought forward to the Advent season until December 26th, the church Christmas actually goes until the Epiphany feast on January 6th, when the carol singers go from house to house in memory of the wise men from the Orient. The traditional performance of the second part of the Christmas Oratorio at the beginning of January corresponds to Johann Sebastian Bach's intention to play the cantatas individually over the entire Christmas period.
