Bach's masterpiece of the musical depiction of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ based on the Gospel of Matthew is one of the high points of Protestant church music. First performed on Good Friday 1727 in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, the St. Matthew Passion is one of the completely preserved authentic passion works by Bach. With a performance time of more than 180 minutes and the participation of several soloists, a large choir and orchestra, it is his most extensive and most heavily scored work.
