Madama Butterfly - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Madama Butterfly

State Opera Choir
Orchestra of the State Opera

The opera is named after American lawyer and author John Luther Long's famous short story Madame Butterfly, which served as the basis for a drama by New York impresario and playwright David Belasco, which in turn directly inspired Puccini's famous opera.

In Madama Butterfly, Puccini eschewed complicated plots and rollicking dramatic events, opting instead for an intimate story and emphasizing the characters' psychology, filling in through his music the smallest details, fluctuations and extreme emotional surges. The contrast between Japanese and "Western" mentality is also aptly portrayed by often surprisingly modified quotes from the US national anthem and a haunting depiction of the local color of Japan. This facet is captured in Jiří Heřman's production, which authentically represents Japanese culture and its traditional customs. The director tells the well-known story in an unconventional way - through the eyes of Cio-Cio San's adult son, who investigates his past in Nagasaki.
