This masterpiece by Frederick Ashton is inspired by the older French ballet by Jean Dauberval. We are invited to a picturesque landscape similar to Suffolk, a place Ashton holds dear.
The backdrops are like cartoons, we enjoy folk festivals, dancing chickens and a live pony, and are drawn into a happy summer atmosphere.
Despite its cheerful character, the work is technically extremely demanding, with difficult pas de deux and solos that express the passionate nature of the young lovers.
