Ballet: Cinderella

The remake of the popular ballet “Cinderella” by the world-famous French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot to the music of Sergei Prokofiev reflects a dramaturgical line of the Czech National Ballet: the effort to bring back to the stage performances that have become very popular in the past because they have never lost their quality and meaning, their artistic value and their current message.

Cinderella is a well-known children's play with exceptional music by Sergei Prokofiev, which, alongside Romeo and Juliet, has become a popular part of the Czech National Ballet's repertoire.

Sergei Prokofiev wrote his score during World War II. He used leitmotifs that reflected the individual situation and highlighted the specific characteristics and feelings of the main characters. Prokofiev's Cinderella
premiered in 1945 and, alongside Romeo and Juliet and The Tale of the Stone Flower, is one of his most frequently performed ballets.

Jean-Christophe Maillot is an outstanding choreographic leader of the equally famous ballet company in Monte Carlo, from which this production comes. Maillot has a very distinct style based on a sophisticated ballet concept. The artist presents the virtuoso classical ballet technique in new movement variations and spatial structures that seem to come from “another world”. His Cinderella also shows this characteristic technique. It is a production of unusual beauty, modern aesthetics and extraordinary energy that permeate all of its musical, artistic, directorial and choreographic components.
