Choir of the National Theater
Orchestra of the National Theater

The National Theater in Prague has been performing the play since 1901, when it premiered there. Inspired by old fairy tale motifs and legends, in particular H. C. Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" and K. J. Erben's ballads from the collection "The Bouquet", librettist Jaroslav Kvapil created a captivating poem of exceptional linguistic and intellectual qualities. Its text served as an excellent basis for Antonín Dvořák, a master of melody and colorful instrumentation, who later conceived his best opera. (Its popularity among Czech audiences can only be compared to that of Bedřich Smetana's The Bartered Bride.) As with other classical works, the genius of Kvapil and Dvořák's Rusalka is enhanced by the numerous possibilities for interpretation. Accordingly, it is up to the production team to decide which of the mysterious themes and motifs to emphasize and which path to take.

The new production of “Rusalka” at the National Theater has been entrusted to SKUTR, a directing tandem whose hugely popular adaptation of Erben’s “The Bouquet” has received critical acclaim. The music comes from Tomáš Netopil, one of the most internationally sought-after Czech conductors.

The production will be presented as part of the celebration of the Year of Czech Music 2024.
