Smetana's Libuše occupies a very special place in Czech opera and culture as a whole. It is directly related to efforts to restore Czech statehood and independence. It was written for the inauguration of the National Theater in Prague, a dream-born artistic institution that foreshadowed the eventual founding of the Czechoslovak Republic itself. Paraphrasing an old Czech fable by Princess Libuše, Smetana not only sings about the nation's former glory in his opera, but above all accentuates an absolutely timeless ideal that may seem almost unattainable today - the friendliness, modesty, wisdom and unanimity of the representatives of a nation and society for that matter.
