For over two centuries, Gioachino Rossini has been one of the most celebrated opera composers, and it would have been even possible had he not written anything other than Il barbiere di Siviglia. Both its creation and its premiere were associated with all sorts of twists and turns that accompany many a play and every opera. The play had to be hastily completed, rehearsed and even more hastily staged; it was the setting of a frequently used literary work; the premiere was poorly received and plagued by scandals etc. In hindsight, and knowing the fates of other creations, such circumstances seem the best prerequisite for future success. Four years after the opera's first performance in 1816 at the Teatro Argentino in Rome, Il barbiere di Siviglia was first performed in German translation at the Estates Theater in Prague, which performed the play in Czech in 1825, thanks largely to the composer and conductor František Škroup (best known for the melody of the Czech national anthem), who later also gave Czech premieres of operas by Wagner and others. The Provisional Theater included Il barbiere di Siviglia in its repertoire in its very first season. Later, the opera was also taken over by the National Theater, which has adapted it in more than ten productions to date.

The latest production was entrusted to Magdalena Švecová, who staged an adaptation of Smetana's The Bartered Bride, which is one of the longest running in the history of the National Theater. The costumes were created by Kateřina Štefková, the sets by David Janošek. The score was enthusiastically accepted by Jaroslav Kyzlink, the music director of the National Theater Opera.
