Jaroslav Vrchlický, still the only poet to have fully translated Tasso's gigantic work into Czech, based his libretto on the love story of Armida, daughter of King Hydraot of Damascus, and Rinald, a knight of the Crusades. Despite her exceptional qualities and beauty, Armida has always been somewhat shunned by theater makers compared to other Dvořák operas. After the premiere in 1904 at the National Theater in Prague, the production was performed only seven times. The opera was next performed in 1928 by Otakar Ostrčil. In 1941 Armida was taken over by Václav Talich, the production was revived by František Škvor after World War II. It was last performed in 1987 under the conductor František Vajnar. More than three decades later, it is time to bring Dvořák's brilliant work back to the stage in its entirety, not just selected arias that opera singers have loved to include in their recitals.

The production of Armida will be the first to be conducted by Robert Jindra since he took over as Music Director of the National Theater Opera. After nine years, the National Theater welcomes Jiří Heřman, who has become one of the most celebrated and sought-after Czech opera directors of recent decades with his demanding and visually intense productions.

Suitable for viewers aged 12 and over.
