The third day of the ‘Ring des Nibelungen’ begins with Erda’s daughters, the Norns, reminding us of the fateful deeds of times past. They are compelled by a corrupt world to weave their fateful threads together until they are tangled in a kind of Gordian knot, a web of power, greed, guilt and transgression.

The gods may have been disempowered but Alberich is still at large: in a whisper he tells his son Hagen to kill Siegfried and win back the ring. Hagen succeeds in gaining Siegfried’s trust in order to be able to murder him. Siegfried’s willingness to be taken in is a renewed sign of the devastating effects of the ring of the Nibelungs. Only when Brünnhilde returns it to the Rhine maidens does the curse appear to be broken. What follows is the fall of the old world which has to end for a new one to be able to rise in its place.
