The rich old miser trying to marry a young woman was a typical figure of mockery in traditional Italian improvised comedy. Don Pasquale is another such character, who wishes to marry in order to disinherit his nephew Ernesto. The wife recommended by his physician Doctor Malatesta turns out to be a wicked fury and none other than Ernesto’s fiancée Norina. Don Pasquale realises that he has been the victim of a plot. As Rolando Villazón sees him, this character in the prime of life almost deserves our sympathy. The multi-talented star tenor directs Donizetti’s opera ‘Don Pasquale’ with terrific humour and a healthy dollop of the sentimentality that distinguishes Donizetti’s opera from the bubbly comedies influenced by Rossini. “In Donizetti’s comic operas like ‘Don Pasquale’ I fundamentally believe that one has to go further than simply presenting their comedy: we need to look for and find their depths.” This was the view on which Rolando Villazón based his directorial concept. His Pasquale is a passionate art collector to whom Doctor Malatesta recommends his suggested bride in the most enthusiastic tones. His nephew Ernesto is briefly overcome with world-weariness and the slap that Don Pasquale receives from the enraged Norina has something tragic about it. Donizetti’s characters are able to make the most of the music while also striking a nerve that brings the old musical comedy to life.
