Bánk Bán (The Viceroy Bánk)

Opera in two parts, three acts, in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitles

The text and music material for the production was created in both the original and the baritone version
After his triumph in the competition to set Ferenc Kölcsey's Himnusz - today's Hungarian national anthem - Ferenc Erkel set out in 1844 to examine the possibilities of using József Katona's much-attacked drama Bánk Bán as a subject for an opera. History made the compositional time long: first came the Hungarian War of Independence in 1848/49, and the censorship of the dictatorship that followed meant that the audience had to wait until March 9, 1861 for the work to be fully performed in the National Theater of Pest. As a result, or in spite of the extensive additions and revisions, what is remarkable about the subsequent performances of the widely acclaimed Bánk Bán is the fact that the text and musical material in both the original version of the work and in the revision of 1939 - which was intended for the wider audience best known - is attributed to Kálmán Nádasdy. The plot thus best reflects the way of thinking of the original playwright József Katona, without forcing us to forego the now timeless great aria "Hazám, hazám" ("My home, my home").
