Amina, destitute orphan, and Elvino, the richest farmer in the village, want to marry. But when Amina is found at night in the room of Count Rodolfo, who has returned after a long absence, the deceptive idyll in the Swiss Alps breaks apart: Elvino dissolves the engagement and returns to his lost lover Lisa. Only when Amina appears in dizzying heights like a ghost of the village community does her innocence become apparent: sleepwalking she was not the mistress of her senses - awakening from the trance, she finds herself as Elvino's bride again. Bellini and his librettist Romani chose a lyrical-romantic subject for their fifth collaboration and embarked on the semi-seria, the half-opera with happy ending. In the center they move the mental life of Aminas: In her two great sleepwalking scenes, the music traces the young woman torn between love, jealousy and alleged guilt. These exceptional moments inspired the composer to some of his most touching "melodie lunghe, lunghe, lunghe" [Verdi].

Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito are reworking their 2012 production for the Stuttgart State Opera in the congenial setting of Anna Viebrock for the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The romantic idyll of the Swiss mountain village they translate into the staid confines of a village inn.
