Il Tamerlano - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Il Tamerlano

Tragedia per Musica in three acts
Antonio Vivaldi
Libretto by Agostino Piovene

An opera for the Venetian carnival is the pasticcio Il Tamerlano, which Antonio Vivaldi wrote in 1735 with an enigmatic idea: he gave the Sultan Bajazet and the Ottomans their own Venetian-style arias, while the "barbaric" Tartars around Tamerlano used Neapolitan-style arias from his younger rivals Johann Adolf Hasse, Riccardo Broschi and Geminiano Giacomelli sing. What was intended for Vivaldi as a point against his competitors proves to be pure musical pleasure for today's listeners. And Ottavio Dantone, who assembled a top-class ensemble for Il Tamerlano, brings all styles of baroque music to life with his Accademia Bizantina.
