The Tales of Hoffmann - Premiere

Fantastic opera by Jacques Offenbach
In German and French with German and English surtitles
Libretto by Jules Barbier, stage adaptation and new version of the dialogues by Peter te Nuyl

The poet Hoffmann sits in a bar, thinking of his lover Stella, who is currently performing brilliantly in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the nearby opera house. At his side is his close friend Nicklausse. But the friend is actually the muse in disguise, and she has only one goal: to lead Hoffmann away from unhappy love and back to noble art. Stimulated by the atmosphere in the bar and irritated by the presence of his romantic rival Lindorf, Hoffmann's mind begins to stir, and memories return. Memories of three women he once loved, who were supposedly torn from him by evil forces: Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta. The poet begins to do what is his duty: to tell stories!

In Lotte de Beer's production, for which Peter te Nuyl has created a new version of the text, the Muse enters into a dialogue with Hoffmann, taking him on a journey, confronting him with himself and his own artistic soul. A dialogue unfolds between the two, a confrontation between art and artist.

Co-production with the Opéra National du Rhin, the Théâtre National de l'Opéra-Comique, and the Opéra de Reims.

Subject to change.
