Ever since its premiere in 1893, Engelbert Humperdinck's fairytale opera »Hänsel und Gretel« has awakened a passion for music theater in generations of children. But also great composer colleagues - such as Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler or Johannes Brahms - were enthusiastic about this work. It is the successful mixture of folk song-like simplicity and the complex musical language of the direct successor to Wagner, of simple melody and artful orchestral treatment, of socially critical realism and atmospheric magic, that makes this setting of the well-known story of the Brothers Grimm so appealing. And so the production of the Vienna State Opera is aimed equally at children and adults and leads through wondrous projections of a lanterna magica into the middle of the fairytale events.
