Unfulfilled love
Richard Wagner had already been living in exile in Switzerland for three years with his wife Minna when he met the silk merchant Otto Wesendonck and his young wife Mathilde in 1852. It was a fateful encounter. The Wesendoncks quickly became friends and supporters, and in the educated Mathilde Wagner found a conversation partner with whom he could share his artistic and philosophical interests. When the family settled near Zurich in 1857, the Wagner couple moved into the garden house belonging to the property. Between November 1857 and April 1858, within a few days each, Wagner set to music those five poems by Mathilde to him, which later became known as "Wesendonck-Lieder".
