A love story against the backdrop of the economic crisis: To keep annoying dowry hunters at bay, Mariza announces her engagement to Kolomán Zsupán. The supposedly fictitious figure really does exist, however, the baron accepts the invitation to his engagement on the countess's estate, which is managed by the impoverished Count Tassilo. He wants to earn the dowry for his sister Lisa. Tassilo woos Mariza, she is interested in him, but thinks Lisa is his lover and, subsequently, he is only a dowry hunter ...
