Umberto Giordano's FEDORA moves between political thriller and crime play, tragic love drama and gripping psychological profile. It was based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou, the same French playwright who inspired Puccini's TOSCA. The acclaimed premiere of FEDORA in 1898 at the Tetro Lirico in Milan became a major event in music history, as it helped one of the greatest singing legends to achieve his breakthrough: Enrico Caruso, who cemented the now most famous number, the aria "Amor ti vieta," a place in the collective memory. The work subsequently conquered the international opera world and was soon performed in Vienna, Paris, Hamburg, and at the New York Met. As Giordano's greatest success alongside ANDREA CHÉNIER, FEDORA continues to delight audiences today with its lush timbres and iconic melodies. In the spirit of the fin de siècle, it portrays a cosmopolitan elite whose private entanglements become caught in the crossfire of political machinations. In St. Petersburg, Princess Fedora Romazoff happily awaits her marriage to Count Vladimir Andreyevich, but on the evening before the wedding, she loses him in a shootout. When she follows the suspected murderer, Count Loris Ipanoff, who had been forced to leave Russia for political reasons, to Paris to confront him, he confesses to the crime and his love for her. However, he claims he caught his own wife in flagrante delicto committing adultery with Fedora's husband, who then opened fire. Thus, it was merely self-defense against the unfaithful man. This information comes too late for Fedora, as she has already sent the Russian police after Loris's family. Secluded in the Swiss Alps, this reality catches up with the lovers, so the remorseful Fedora sees no other choice but to take her own life.

After the celebrated series of opera rarities from the early 20th century, which culminated in Ottorino Respighi's LA FIAMMA in the fall of 2024, Christof Loy now brings a gem of Italian verismo to the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin with FEDORA. The award-winning director, who just last year received the International Opera Award again, explores the title character in all her complexity and ambiguity in his production, weaving a sophisticated network of relationships between the actors and captivating with his masterful direction of the characters in the scenery created by stage and costume designer Herbert Murauer. The successful production has already caused a sensation in Stockholm and Frankfurt – now FEDORA is coming to Berlin.
