For years Elektra has been waiting for the hour of revenge on her mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisth, who had murdered Elektra's father Agamemnon. Elektra feeds her hate anew every day, while her sister Chrysothemis hopes in vain for an escape from her icy surroundings and Klytemnestra is robbed of her sleep by her feelings of guilt. However, when Orestes finally appears and takes revenge, Elektra's life loses its only meaning. A chamber play on stage, a sound giant in the orchestra: In »Elektra« a family tragedy of violence and monstrosities unfolds and with it a psychogram of guilt and atonement, forgiveness and revenge and the question of justice. Richard Strauss, who wrote »Elektra« in 1909 as a follow-up to his »Salome« for the Dresden Opera House, together with the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal created a new, violent psychological image of ancient mythology. The director Barbara Frey staged Strauss' opera as a gripping drama.
