Eine Nacht in Venedig

Operetta by Johann Strauss
In German with German and English surtitles

Libretto by Richard Genée and Camillo Walzel
New version of the dialogues by Fabian Pfleger

The subject of the operetta A Night in Venice, written in 1883, capitalized on the exuberant enthusiasm that Vienna felt for the Serenissima, which reached a further peak with the opening of the "Venice in Vienna" theme park in the Prater in 1895. The plot revolves around the pleasure-loving Duke of Urbino, a widely notorious womanizer who wants to use the carnival season to attempt a conquest under the cover of the colorful masked festivities... Specifically, the Duke has Barbara, the wife of the Venetian Senator Delaqua, in his sights. Several plans, one to prevent this and the other to promote it, thwart each other, and so the Duke ultimately finds himself with two Barbaras!

Dutch director Nina Spijkers, who previously directed The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Volksoper, takes over the production and explores the work's escapist and hedonistic potential.
