Human relationships, either friendship or love, have no place in the Spain of Philip II. The King is required to kill a kindred spirit in Marquis Posa, his son Carlo must renounce Elisabetta, who was once betrothed to him and then forced to marry his father, and he too will ultimately lose his life. Only the power of the Grand Inquisitor remains undiminished and it is stronger than ever. No one can escape from him. Even Posa, who believed he could control these powerful forces, has been under surveillance for a long time. In Verdi’s opera – unlike Schiller’s play on which it is based – the devastating auto da fé, in which enemies of the Inquisition are burnt to death, is emblematic of the destruction of any kind of privacy or humanity.

Director Guy Joosten sees ‘Don Carlo’ as a permanent auto da fé – in a figurative sense: this is where people are burnt dying for their ideals, the victims of a father’s power – power exercised by man but coming “from above,” deriving its authority from a god that is exploited by the church.
