»The Magic Flute« is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's best-known opera and, for many visitors, the entry point into the world of music theatre. But this opera is by no means a work that can be clearly defined, but just as enigmatically lucid as much of its composer's work: is it a child of the suburban theater or does it symbolize the rites of a secret society? Is it great world theater or just sensual spectacle? The directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier are looking for an answer by escaping any simple black-and-white thinking and by not dividing the world into good and bad, but by negotiating different principles of life in their production: detached thinking versus unbridled emotionality, reflection versus immediacy, childishness versus mature deliberation.
