With the four-part »Ring des Nibelungen« Wagner created from the spirit of early socialism in a creative process lasting more than 25 years the most powerful coherent work in opera history up to that point – a world-spanning, openly critical of capitalism parable about the irreconcilable opposition of power and love. The second part, »Die Walküre«, which is often taken out of the overall context and shown separately, combines a large number of the most popular musical sections of the tetralogy, such as Siegmund’s spring song »Winterstürme wichen dem Wonnemond«, the proclamation of death, the Ride of the Valkyries or Wotan’s farewell. The story tells of the failure of the hero Siegmund, who was intended to save the world, and at the same time the burgeoning hope of rescue from the renegade Valkyrie Brünnhilde, who resisted her father Wotan.
