Die Jüdin von Toledo - Premiere
Premiere. Opera in five acts libretto by Hans-Ulrich Treichel
Premiering February 10, 2024
In German with German and English surtitles
The premiere of »Die Jüdin von Toledo« by the German composer Detlev Glanert with a libretto by Hans-Ulrich Treichel will be a unique experience in the last season of artistic director Peter Theiler. With more than a dozen operas, Detlev Glanert has made a very important contribution to recent music theater history. The production is being designed by the internationally renowned Canadian director Robert Carsen, who is making his debut at the Semperoper.
In the five-act opera "The Jewess of Toledo" he traces the forbidden love story between the Spanish King Alfonso VIII and his Jewish lover Rahel - a dramatic and at the same time gripping material that oscillates between private feelings and state obligations. The starting point is the historical tragedy in five acts »Die Jüdin von Toledo« by the Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer for the opera of the same name, which combines late romantic sounds with traditions from the 20th century and thus creates its own, genuinely highly differentiated tonal language.
