Die Hochzeit des Figaro - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Die Hochzeit des Figaro

With Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro”, one of the core pieces of our house's repertoire returns to the repertoire. Marco Arturo Marelli had staged the work as part of his Da Ponte cycle at the Volksoper as early as 1989. In 2012 he brought it out again, fine-tuning, so to speak. The stage space designed by the director himself is noble and simple, while Dagmar Niefind's historicizing costumes are elegant and unobtrusive. The gaze and attention remain undisguised on the characters involved and, even more than 235 years after its creation, on the topicality of the work: It is Susanna's cleverness that prevents emotional catastrophes, sees through all intrigues and discreetly thwarted them. The servant, who is almost a serf, is therefore superior to the noble rulers. While it was a risk at the time of the premiere to show this idea publicly, questioning existing power structures has lost none of its urgency. The opera's puns and situational comedy have been entertaining "long-running hits" for centuries anyway.
