Not many important masterpieces were premiered in the Haus am Ring. However, Richard Strauss' and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's fourth joint opera Die Frau ohne Schatten is one of the few exceptions: On October 10, 1919, the work that Strauss regarded as "the last romantic opera" was born at the Vienna State Opera and since then has been a fixed part of the international fixtures. Already during the joint work, the composer enthused about the libretto: "Incredibly noble, magnificent, mature and interesting, with magnificent dramatic, moral problems, splendid scenical processes." Strauss took musical ideas and musical dramaturgical ideas from Richard Wagner and continued them in his spirit , Mozart's Magic Flute, on the other hand, was the inspiration for the magic-fairy-tale ambience and the trials imposed on the hero.
