Die Fledermaus

Operetta in three acts
Libretto by Richard Genée

On April 5, 1874, the curtain rose on what is now Linke Wienzeile for a premiere that would forever change the genre of operetta, the life of the composer Johann Strauss, and thus also the history of the Theater an der Wien. For Die Fledermaus joyfully broke all boundaries: the differences between boulevard theater and grand opera, between stage and opera, appearance and reality, festive ball and cheerful prison, nobility and servants were washed away by champagne. Despite its worldwide triumph, Die Fledermaus remains a work that belongs to Vienna like no other. It has been included on the repertoire for a wide variety of occasions, for the bliss of a waltz can also disguise many a skeleton in the closet... On the occasion of Johann Strauss's 200th birthday, the MusikTheater an der Wien is determined to celebrate the "Queen of all Operettas" with a new production. And, as with the premiere, the artistic director is also involved this time: While over 150 years ago, director Marie Geistinger shone in the leading role of Rosalinde, now the house's owner, Stefan Herheim, is personally responsible for the direction.
