Johann Strauss (1825–1899)’s ‘Die Fledermaus’ is regarded by many as the ultimate operetta. The reasons for its popularity are many: its wealth of musical ideas, its inimitable Viennese humour, the libidinous champagne lifestyle of its setting and a plot that fits painlessly into bourgeois circumstances that are not entirely innocent but ultimately decent.
The honourable Herr von Eisenstein has been sentenced to eight days in prison for ungentlemanly behaviour and is determined to party hard beforehand, his wife Rosalinde pretends to be inconsolable but is already planning an affair and their supposed family friend has cunningly set up a trick to gain revenge for an earlier prank that reaches its orgiastic culmination at Prince Orlofsky’s party before ending in an orderly fashion behind the walls of the city prison.
Axel Kohler, following a long and successful career as an Alto singer, has also become a much sought-after theatre director since 2000. He and his designer Frank Philipp Schlößmann proved that they also have a gift for operetta with their production of Zeller’s ‘Der Vogelhändler’, which won them BR-Klassik’s ‘Operettenfrosch’ award.
