The Abduction from the Seraglio - Schedule, Program & Tickets
The Abduction from the Seraglio
Singspiel in three acts
Libretto by Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, based on the text by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner for the operetta Belmont and Constanze or The Abduction from the Seraglio by Johann André
In German with German and English surtitles
The clash of two cultures becomes a struggle for love, loyalty, power, and humanity.
Kidnapped by pirates and taken to the Seraglio by the Pasha Selim, Pedrillo, his lover Blonde, and Constanze hope to be rescued. Constanze's fiancé, Belmonte, attempts to free them but fails. Only the Pasha himself can ultimately grant them their freedom. Orientalism and the Enlightenment meet colorful costumes and a fairytale setting in this production by Dutch director and set designer Michiel Dijkemas. In The Abduction from the Seraglio, premiered in Vienna in 1782, Mozart brings together pieces that remain among the best-known pieces in operatic literature, including Konstanze's "Marternaria," Blonde's "Wonne Wonne, welche Lust," Pedrillo's "Auf zum Kampfe," and the exotic-sounding Chorus of the Janissaries.
