First part

The Spanish nobleman Belmonte appears in front of Pasha Selim's estate in search of his fiancée Konstanze. She was kidnapped by pirates together with her servant, the English maid Blonde, and Belmonte's servant Pedrillo. He meets Osmin, the overseer of the estate, who hostilely refuses to give him the information he wants. Only after meeting Pedrillo again does Belmonte learn that Konstanze and the couple Blonde and Pedrillo were bought as slaves by Bassa Selim. This loves Konstanze, but has not yet been heard. As a European who had converted to Islam, he had "still enough delicacy not to force any of his wives to fall in love." Belmonte can secretly convince himself of this when the bassa appears with his entourage and Konstanze and gives in to Konstanze's renewed requests for a postponement of her decision. Pedrillo succeeds in presenting Belmonte to the Bassa as the master builder and thus gives him access to the palace against Osmin's resistance.

Blonde, who was given to Osmin as a slave, knows how to defend herself self-confidently against the loving Turk's advances. Again the Bassa courts Konstanze's favour, but she feels obliged to Belmonte. She would rather endure the torture threatened by the offended Bassa than be unfaithful to Belmonte.

Second part

The reunion is imminent, Belmonte is expecting his beloved. When the two European couples face each other, the joy is severely clouded: Belmonte and Pedrillo doubt the fidelity of the women. Konstanze and Blonde are deeply hurt. The kidnapping of the women planned for midnight fails because Osmin, who had been drunk by Pedrillo, wakes up too early from his intoxication. Osmin sees his hour of revenge at hand. In Belmonte, who begs for mercy, the bassa recognizes the son of his deadly enemy, who once stole his beloved and forced him to leave his fatherland. The two couples await death. The Bassa, however, gives everyone freedom: "Anyone who cannot be won over by doing good, one must get rid of." the role. The Bassa stays alone.
