Even the contemporaries of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were aware that THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAIL had turned out to be far more significant than the generic term “Singspiel” would suggest. Not only the client, Emperor Joseph II., Confused the “huge number of notes” at the Vienna premiere in 1784, Goethe also felt compelled to question his own efforts in German-language Singspiele in view of the resounding success of Mozart's piece. The ENTFEHRUNG was soon regarded as the first German national opera: the first successful attempt to counter the theatrical affect language of Italian opera with an equivalent work in German. This concerns above all the emotional depth of the characters: In the extreme situation of the stranger, which isolates the couple Belmonte and Konstanze from all external social influences, Mozart succeeds in expressing the fundamental question of human relationships in an unconditional way musically: I love the other really so that I want to spend my life with him? And do I know myself so well that I can form such a bond with a clear conscience?

The ENTFEHRUNG has repeatedly inspired important theater makers to deal with it - all the more since its structure, with its alternation of spoken dialogues and musical numbers, is more open to textual arrangements than thoroughly composed operas. In June 2016 one of the most exciting and uncompromising directors on the European theater scene made his musical theater debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with the ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAIL: The Argentine Rodrigo García has celebrated great international successes with pieces such as “Gólgota Picnic”.
