Of the three operas that Francis Poulenc created, his only full-length opera is based on a historical event from the »Grande Terreur« period in France: on July 12, 1794, 16 nuns who belonged to the Carmel of Compiègne were executed in Paris. After the abolition of all religious communities by the National Assembly, they had continued to practice their faith together, and the Revolutionary Tribunal accordingly charged them with counter-revolutionary practices. In the most famous scene of his work - the last one - Poulenc set this execution to music, not only following the literary models for his libretto, but also following tradition: The nuns mount the scaffold, singing the Salve Regina. With the sound of the guillotine, one voice stops until at the end only one singer can be heard. When this voice is also interrupted by the sharp sound of the guillotine and shortly afterwards another soprano voice begins to sing the Veni creator spiritus, that strong amalgamation of historicizing and fictional elements reaches its climax, which made the dialogues such gripping theatrical material and contributed to the work to secure a significant place in the history of opera in the 20th century.
