Volksoper, Währingerstrasse 78, 1090 Vienna
Operetta by Franz Lehár
In German with German and English surtitles
Libretto by Bela Jenbach and Heinz Reichert
Performed version and new version of the dialogues by Jürgen Bauer
The young heir to the throne, Alyosha, is deeply unhappy. He feels alone, loneliness gnaws at him, but the true reason for his unhappiness lies even deeper, perhaps unknown to him. Until now, Alyosha has avoided contact with women, yet he longs for something and someone. This "angel" appears to Alyosha in the form of a young man. Alyosha takes a liking to him, but soon he can no longer explain his feelings to himself. In Lehár's version, this man is the disguised ballet dancer Sonya, who was brought to him to ensure the continuation of the dynasty. Soon, the relationship, which is not in keeping with their social standing, must end, but Alyosha and Sonya are unwilling to give up their feelings.
Dutch director and visual artist Steef de Jong transforms the work, originally set in Russia, into a universal fairytale land. He brings The Tsarevich to the stage as a live-animated silent film featuring four singers. Through beautiful and imaginative drawings and animations, filmed and projected live, a unique aesthetic cosmos emerges into which the audience can immerse themselves.
